Do you walk into a hotel room and say, “Aw…” while letting out a sigh of relief? There’s no clutter; it smells clean and feels like an excellent resting place.

After one of my Housework Yuck Seminars, a gal asked how to keep homes clean daily.

The SECRET – Implementing two routines will help us create spaces in our homes to rest, relax, and refresh our spirits.

I call them Get Up and Tidy Up.

  1. Get Up

Spend 15 minutes each morning and complete three simple tasks.

  • Start a load of laundry.
  • Empty the dishwasher and reload with the breakfast dishes.
  • Walk through the house and put away anything lying around.
  • If you have lots of pet hair, add a quick sweep or dust of the main traffic areas.

  1. Tidy Up

Do three tasks each evening.

  • Put a load of dirty clothes in the washing machine, ready to turn on in the morning.
  • Load and run the dishwasher after dinner. Wash and dry any other dishes before leaving the kitchen.
  • Clean up any spills in the kitchen and crumbs under the table, or teach the kids to do it.
  • Walk through the house and put away anything out of place.

Start Here if you don’t have these routines established yet.

  • Teach the kids to pick up their toys twice a day, before school, lunch, dinner, or bedtime.
  • Have a place by the door for the kids to remove their shoes before entering the house.
  • De-clutter! It’s tough to clean or keep clutter clean.

Adding one routine at a time will help us build homes where we can relax, refresh, and recharge.
